EU-25: Dairy Sector Overview in 2005

24 October 2005 - With accession of the 10 New Member States (NMS) well behind us, EU dairy markets are stabilizing again and lasting market dynamics become clearer. Milk production is increasing in the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Poland, while in some other NMS like Hungary, Slovenia and the Slovak Republic, which used to have higher dairy subsidy levels, the sector still has difficulties to adapt to the changed market conditions. Especially the Polish dairy processing sector appears to be very efficient because of the large investments to upgrade the sector to meet EU sanitary standards and because of the increase in milk deliveries to the industry .

Recovering Demand and Strong Trade Prospects Support High Meat Prices in 2005

03 October 2005 - Although recent new outbreaks of Avian Influenza (AI) extending westwards from Asia into the Russian Federation are raising concerns over potential disruption in the global meat industry sector, international meat markets in the past few months were characterized by a strong recovery from the previous wave of disruption caused by animal disease problems in 2004. An increase in demand for meat, as consumption returned closer to normal levels, and the reopening of many previously closed markets has put strong upward pressure on international prices in the first half of 2005.

Ukraine's Livestock and Product Markets in 2005

30 August 2005 - In 2006, Ukraine's beef and pork enterprises will continue to be extremely inefficient. Beef will continue to be supplied predominately from private households and from dairy animals. A few investment projects aimed at building modern hog operations will be unable to increase pork supplies or dramatically improve the deficit in the market. Both production and consumption of red meat in Ukraine in 2005 have decreased, yet some signs of stabilization are evident in industrial pork production.

Analysis of US Poultry Trade with the EU: Past, Present, Future

29 August 2005 - The EU imports an average of $1.2 billion of poultry per year. However, none of that poultry is currently coming from the US, although annual US exports of poultry average $2.2 billion per year. With a market of 25 member states and 455 million consumers, imports of US poultry should be greater than they are. The EU's 1997 ban on the use of anti-microbial treatments for sanitizing poultry carcasses effectively halted US poultry exports to the EU, even though the use of anti-microbial treatments is approved by FDA.

29 August 2005 - Avian influenza has tipped the balance of live and raw poultry export trade between Asia and Brazil plainly in favour of Brazil. But what contingencies are the Brazilian authorities making to face a hypothetical outbreak of the H5N1 virus capable of decimating the country's poultry industry that in 2004 injected US$2.5 billion (FOB basis) into the Brazilian economy?

25 August 2005 - Broiler production is expected to increase by 5 percent in 2006, following a record production of 9.1 million metric tons estimated for this year. The increase in broiler production in Brazil continues to be driven by record exports as Brazil makes major in-roads in different markets due to the animal health problems faced by some competitors. In addition, firm domestic consumption contributes to the expansion in production.

Outlook for EU Poultry Market 2005 - 2012

18 August 2005 - Poultry production gradually recovered after the outbreak of avian flu in the Netherlands during spring 2003, which reduced EU production in 2003 by more than 2 %. Production in 2004 reached 11 mio t, slightly less than pre-2003 levels. The medium-term outlook for poultry production remains relatively positive as competitive prices with respect to other meats, strong consumer preference and increased use in food preparations should continue to play in favour of poultry.

EU: Projections for Pigmeat Market 2005 - 2012

17 August 2005 - EU-25 pig meat production decreased slightly in 2004 due to the strong contraction of the pig herd in the new Member States which more than compensated the increase in the EU-15. Over the medium term pig meat production, which is assumed to be driven mostly by demand (internal and external), is expected to increase but at a slower rate than in the nineties, due to the competition of poultry meat which is foreseen to capture most of the increase in overall meat consumption. EU-25 pig meat production is projected to reach around 22 mio t by 2012.

Russia Poultry: Brazil Alone Filled 'Other Countries' Import Quota

02 August 2005 - Russian media have commented that one country, Brazil, may fill the poultry import quotas of "other countries" and of the EU. Brazil, which the Russian government has always listed under "other countries" in its ranking of poultry suppliers, may take second place after the U.S. in terms of poultry exports to Russia. Russian importers used the veterinary ban on poultry imports from southern Italian regions to have quotas intended for the EU reallocated in favor of Brazil.
